Today, old oak trees, wide roads and whitewashed homesteads recall Swellendam’s past as a frontier town. From here there’s easy access to a myriad outdoor wilderness experiences.

So drop your socks and get paddling in the widest river mouth around or haul out your kite board and hit the estuary. With up to 165 whales a day in the bay and 62 calves born here last season, Witsand is deservedly known as “The Whale Nursery” of South Africa. The annual population growth is estimated at 7%.
