Dates grow well at Upington. The first palms are said to have originated during the Anglo Boer War when British soldiers received dates as art of their rations. The men pushed the date stones into the mud on the riverbanks and many thousand palms grew.

Set on the banks of the Orange River, Upington is one of the larger towns in the Northern Cape and the centre of the local lucerne, sultanas, raisins, dried fruits, cotton, peas, sheep, goat and cattle industries.
Lying on the banks of the mighty Orange River, Upington is the gateway to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and close to the Augrabies Falls. The park is one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa. It has lion, cheetah, leopard, profuse birdlife and is home to the magnificent gemsbok. Its stark beauty and isolation are a fascinating contrast to other game parks.
