The Kalahari ![]() The wild desert area is home to scorpions, hot sun and rugged beauty. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Formerly known as the Kalahari National Park, the park has been re-named in honour of the San who still live here. Kgalagadi means place without water. The Kalahari is a semi-desert which stretches north from the Orange river to the Okavango Delta in Northern Botswana, west into Namibia and east towards the Vaal and Limpopo rivers. The park was proclaimed in 1931 to protect the area from game hunters. 10 000 square kilometres of wilderness is bounded on the east by the dry Nossob River bed, on the west by the Namibian border and to the south by the dry Auob River. There is no barrier on the Botswanan side, which allows animals to move along their migration routes. Thinly vegetated red or orange sand dunes scored by dry river beds and large salt pans are a characteristic feature. Daytime temperatures are very high in summer (35°C plus) and winter nights are extremely cold. Animals found here include lion, leopard, cheetah, antelopes such as the magnificent gemsbok, eland, springbok in large numbers, and wildebeest. Hyena and jackal are also found in the park and there is a huge variety of birdlife ranging from the smallest bird of prey in Africa, the pigmy falcon, to the largest flying bird, the kori bustard.
