Southern Drakensberg

The Southern Drakensberg is a beautiful area leading up into the Drakensberg and Lesotho. It includes Sani Pass, The Kamberg Nature Reserve and the Loteni Nature reserve.

The Sani Pass is the backdoor to Lesotho, a hair-raising pass that twists its way up to the Roof of Africa, reaching a height of 2865m. There are four state forests in the Southern Berg (Highmoor, Mkhomazi, Cobham and Garden Castle) as well as yellowwood forests, montane heath scrub and evergreen and seasonal grasslands. It is a major catchment area and is traversed by the Mzimkulu River and its tributaries and the Mkhomazana River. The 5 day Giant’s Cup hiking trail goes from Sani Pass to Bushman’s Nek. It winds through the foothills of the Berg and ends beyond the Lesotho border post. There are numerous shorter walks and some fine examples of San art in the Southern Berg. Birds include the black and martial eagle, jackal buzzard, lammergeyer (bearded vulture) and the Cape vulture.
