Punda Maria and Makuleke

A community project that preserves our natural heritage for all to enjoy.

In 1969 the Makuleke were forcibly removed from their land and relocated outside the Punda Maria Gate of the Kruger National Park. The Land Restitutions Programme returned 25 000 hectares to them in 1996, but instead of reoccupying the land they allowed it to remain part of the Park. They now manage it jointly with the SA National Parks as the Makuleke Contract Park, and use the land for conservation, concessions and tourism-related enterprises.

Mainliner bus services
These are usually air-conditioned “luxury buses” which have on-board toilets and a hostess who occasionally offers you a sugary drink or blanket. “Chicken (pack ‘em and stack ‘em) busses” are cheaper, less spacious, more crowded, more likely to be fun (if you have a sense of humour) and more likely to break down. In some areas they may be the only bus service and are unlikely to have a strict timetable.
