Oribi Gorge

This spectacular gorge is one of the South Coast highlights.

We have a suspicion that locals have been keeping Oribi to themselves. But the secret’s now out. This spectacular gorge is one of the South Coast highlights. Cliffs rise out of the forest and hikes lead to scenic viewpoints, idyllic picnic spots and a dramatic waterfall. Wildlife includes buck, monkeys, birds and the ever-elusive leopard.

The gorge is a 24km long chasm, cut by the river through the sandstone 300 million years ago. It’s 5km wide and 400m deep. There are some magnificent lookout spots, with names Baboon’s Castle, the Pulpit and Lover’s Leap. The bird watching is excellent. The 200 odd species of birds include seven eagle and five kingfisher species. Vervet and samango monkeys (a leopard’s favourite snack) both hide in the forests.
