Northern Drakensberg

The northern section includes the Royal Natal National Park and the spectacular Golden Gate National Park in the Free State.

The Royal Natal National Park is a majestic oval bounded by mountains. The dramatic southern boundary is formed by the cliffs of the Amphitheatre which drop abruptly into the valley. The Tugela River plunges over these cliffs in a series of leaps that take it 850m down into the gorge below. Eight other rivers spring from the Mont-Aux-Sources, where the Tugela begins its journey to the sea. There are 31 hikes laid out in the Royal Natal, ranging from an easy 3km stroll to the more challenging overnight hike up Mont-Aux-Sources. 184 species of birds live here and mammals include the klipspringer, baboon, mountain reedbuck, porcupine, grey rhebok and grey duiker.
